2024 Main Event Program Preview: Riviera Prep
December 4, 2024 by Brian Flinn
The 2024 Main Event tips off on Friday. With 10 teams playing in 7 games across two days, the Main event will offer several teams a way to truly test themselves on a national level. With the games being streamed on the NBA App, the MADE Hoops Main Event will have all eyes on Miami this weekend. The opening game features local powerhouse Riviera Prep, who will take on Southern California Academy. With that in mind, MADE highlights some players to know and things to look for for the Bulldogs heading into the weekend.
Fuentes Brothers Set the Tone
The backcourt of Mason and Myles Fuentes is a highly competitive one. So much so that Riviera enters this season in search of a third straight championship. The brothers are both vocal, fiery, and deceptively athletic. They’ll be counted on to create and put pressure on the defense as well as feed Riviera’s talented front court.
Don’t Sleep on Gustavo Guimares
Senior center Gustavo Guimares will also likely feature heavily in the first game of the weekend. The 6-foot-10 Brazilian junior national team member is a sturdily built big man with good hands and footwork who sets great screens and provides value as a roll man. He will have to have a big impact around the rim on both ends of the floor if Riviera is going to pull out the victory in front of their fans.
Do the Underclassmen Take Center Stage?
Yes, Guimares and Mason Fuentes are both division one prospects in their own right, but neither are any of the three nationally ranked players currently in the program. Those honors go to 2027 forward Jeremy Jenkins (11th), Myles Fuentes (76th), and freshman wing Laron Mack (47th), Jenkins potentially will have a good head-to-head test with a couple of different players in SCA’s front court, while Mack could serve as an X-factor of sorts with his size and scoring ability. If both have big games, Riviera is in a good spot on Friday evening.
Perfection On the Line
The Bulldogs have started off the season with a 3-0 record, including an impressive win over Ridge View (SC) over this past weekend. Southern California Academy will arguably be their toughest test of the young season to this point. If they are going to stay undefeated they’ll need both their seniors and star underclassmen to step up. It will be interesting to see how much of a home court advantage they receive from the Miami-Dade crowd over the weekend.
