Top-150 2024 G Cash Chavis chooses Washington
November 3, 2023 by Max Feldman
THE LEAD
Cash Chavis, a Top-150 guard in the class of 2024, has committed to Washington. The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native chose UW over Arizona State, Georgia and West Virginia.
BACKGROUND
Chavis asserted himself into the Top-150 picture and squarely on high major's radars this past spring and summer with strong showings in 3SSB play and at Pangos All-American camp. In 13 games with J Sizzle, he produced 17 points, 5.6 assists, 4 rebounds, 1.6 steals and over 5 trips to the free throw line per game. A dynamic transition threat with fast-twitch athleticism and two-way impact.
SOUND BITE
Chavis on what separated UW from the pack...
"The coaching staff as a whole. They push their guys really hard but also provide a ton of support off the floor. Bunch of guys on the staff have also spent time in the NBA in one way or another, so that was big."
Chavis on the on-court fit, their vision for him...
"They play fast. They think I can come in and make an impact early with my defense and passing ability, that's the plan. They really like my athleticism and ability to get to the rim, too. Next is step is being more consistent with my shot."
WHAT'S NEXT?
Chavis is UW's first commitment in the class of 2024, and to this stage, they've offered just a small pool of prospects. They're set to lose five seniors to exhausted eligibility and will look to reload with a veteran group via the portal in 2024-25 as they enter the Big Ten. Mike Hopkins and company look to be in good standing with a number of high level 2025 prospects such as Tounde Yessoufou, Jovani Ruff, Legend Smiley, Will Riley, Jordan Scott, Davis Fogle and more.
MY TAKE
A very nice get for UW, who continue to intermix scalable young prospects into the mix with talented, veteran pieces from the portal. Chavis' ability to defend at the point of attack, create easy opportunities in transition and pressure the rim should translate rather quickly as the Dawgs transition to the Big Ten. He's steadily grown more nuanced as a decision-maker from the heart of defenses and has no issues getting defenses in rotation because of his blistering speed. Under Mike Hopkins, UW has been near the top of the PAC-12 each year in free throw attempts and steals per game -- making Chavis a hand in glove fit. Spacing the floor with more consistency will open up the rest of his downhill attack and be the door to taking on even in a bigger role early on his career in Seattle. For a program looking to make the leap up standings, bringing in freshman who are capable of providing value from day one are key. Chavis has the tools to do so.
