Ty-Laur Johnson Commits To Louisville
May 23, 2023 by Tony McNiff
The #116 player in our 2023 rankings, Ty-Laur Johnson has officially committed to Louisville. He was one of the top lead guards who became available after he decommitted from Memphis. He committed to Louisville over NC State, Seton Hall, Ole Miss, St. John’s, and more. Johnson will join Dennis Evans (#30), Trentyn Flowers (#64), Kaleb Glenn (#114), and Curtis Williams Jr (#127) in Kenny Payne’s 2023 recruiting class. Louisville has added a collection of players from the transfer portal, including Skyy Clark (Illinois), Tre White (USC), and Danilo Jovanovich (Miami). Johnson was a strong pickup for the Cardinals, as he’ll add some notable backcourt depth.
Johnson was a notable stockriser last year on the EYBL Circuit after he was highly productive for the New York Rens. He’s an ultra-quick lead guard who possesses extreme end to end speed with the ball in his hands. Excels at leveraging his shifty handle and swift changes of pace to beat closeouts & put pressure on the rim. Johnson is a crafty finisher with evident touch, plus he has a strong understanding of angles and attacking lanes to get downhill. He’s a comfortable pull-up scorer inside the arc who has the touch & fluidity to settle into mid-range jumpers. Tends to be a bit of a streaky shooter on the perimeter, however he has the shooting range to convert three-point jumpers if he's left open or feeling it. Willing playmaker who can be ball-dominant and turnover-prone at times, yet he has the feel & passing accuracy to find teammates when they are in a scoring position. Defensively, he’s laterally quick which allows him to defend in space, plus he leverages his quick hands to disrupt the flow/rhythm of opposing ball handlers.
