2023 forward Brandon Gardner commits to St. John’s: ‘It’s about the fit’

Class of 2023 four-star forward Brandon Gardner has committed to St. John’s, he tells MADEHoops.

“It’s about the fit,” Gardner said by phone ahead of his public announcement. “This recruiting process has been great. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I just really appreciate all the coaches that have checked me out over these years.”

Gardner also mentioned his official visit to St. John’s on Feb. 8 for the Red Storm’s contest against Villanova as a key event in his recruitment.

“When I was at the game, I thought, I could be on the court right now,” he said. “It’s about fit. Mike Anderson plays a fast system and I’m a fast type of player. I play fast, I like lobs, blocking shots, shooting threes and all of that. I love playing fast.”

Gardner also gave credit to assistant coach Van Macon, who was the primary assistant on staff focused on recruiting him.

“Van Macon is the man with the plan,” Gardner said. “He’s my head recruiter. He recruited me. I have a lot of respect for Van Macon.”

After receiving double-digit offers throughout the process and eventually choosing St. John’s over the likes of Auburn, LSU and Georgetown, Gardner said he’s focused on improving his ball
handling, patience, shot making and decision making.

“I feel like I have the athleticism of an NBA player, so I think I’ll be very athletic in that system,” he said. “I’ll be taking shots if they need me to take shots. If they need me to block shots, I’ll
block shots. I’ll just do everything - catch lobs, block shots, take shots and throw lobs to the other big.”

As the first commit in the St. John’s 2023 recruiting class, Gardner said he’s got his sights set on recruiting four-star shooting guard Carl Cherenfant and four-star power forward Brandon
