The 2025 Midwest Clash tipped off in Chesterfield, Missouri on Saturday and the action was fast and furious throughout the first first day. A number of top programs from all different circuits and states converged at the Chesterfield Sports Complex for a weekend filled with high level hoops. MADE breaks down some of the top storylines from day one.
Ian Thomas Looks Like A Steal
Midpro South continues to operate as a high level program and this year’s team is evident of that. 6-foot-3 guard Ian Thomas was great on Saturday, first scoring the ball, and then finding open shooters as the Kentucky Ambition defense keyed in on him. He showcased good decision making, shooting, and ball handling. With offers from Drake, SIU-E, Valpo, Southern Illinois, SEMO, Northern Illinois, and Austin Peay, a good number of region low and mid-major programs are already recruiting him. It will be interesting to see how this Spring plays out for the talented combo guard.
Keep an Eye on Goay Gatwech
A rangy 6-foot-6 wing with the ability to knock down threes or attack off the dribble, Goay Gatwech was one of the more intriguing players in the 16U division on Saturday. His ability to score off the bounce or space the floor allowed him to be a consistent offensive threat, and he should continue his strong performances on day two of the Midwest Clash.
WeR1 Premier Look like 15U MHC Contenders
Led by the perimeter attack of Khordell Gregory, Bryce Millien, and Jamalda King, WeR1 looks poised to challenge for the 15U MHC crown this season. An aggressive group that excels at turning up the pressure, all three helped force turnovers and were able to score at the rim with regularity. A trip to Baltimore in just two short weeks looms for a group ready to make serious noise this season.
Thompson’s Game Evidence of Luka Effect
Watching 2028 guard Lucas Thompson run point for MidPro and it’s hard not to see the influence of Lakers guard Luka Doncic. This is by no means a comparison of the 6-foot-5, 225 pound freshman and the generational talent, but as Midpro ran its offense through the wing as he picked out cutters and shooters, it’s easy to see Doncic’s influence. The lower ranks tend to mimic what happens in the pros, and as the European guard has taken center stage over the years, players in the states continue to study and attempt to copy parts of his game. It will be interesting to see what level Thompson ultimately ends up playing at.
