Friday Storylines
Sizzle MHC and Toronto Select Close Day 1 With 16U OT Thriller
Friday’s final game closed the day on a fitting note, as Sizzle MHC and Toronto Select battled into overtime before Sizzle pulled out a hard-fought 39-37 victory.
In a game that seemed to feature a little bit of everything – at one point Sizzle quickly inbounded and scored an unopposed two points when Toronto Select was late coming back onto the court after a timeout – the action was closely-contested throughout. The teams exchanged big plays down the stretch, and both got looks at a potential winning basket in the final seconds but couldn’t convert.
Toronto Select scored first in In overtime – which was first to four points – forcing Sizzle to withstand a few nerve-racking possessions as Select looked for a potential winner. Sizzle finally responded in transition to to set up a climactic ‘next bucket wins’ scenario. It was Sizzle that got it, as Naomi Torres knifed through the lane and finished off balance to seal the victory.
The win improved Sizzle to 2-0 on the day after another tight win earlier against BCRI.
SIzzle MHC 17U Impressed
The Sizzle 16’s weren’t the only team in the organization to impress in their MHC debut. The 17’s picked up a 56-51 win over BCRI, led by 16 points from guard Yaleyla Pedraza and 14 from guard Brooklyn O’Gallagher.
Depth Keys Maryland Lady Shooters MHC 17 In Win
Maryland Shooters MHC showcased the depth of its roster in a 50-41 win over Virginia Valkyrie MHC.
Guard Huntyr Marks and forward Maci Lilly helped the Shooters build a large early lead, but as the gap slowly closed, they got key contributions from several other players. Carmen Hubbard, Stephanie Bunker and Jillian Gross made critical plays down the stretch: big buckets, key defensive stops and crucial rebounds.
Friday Superlatives
Ms. Attack Mode – Sol Rodriguez, 2028 Guard, IMG Academy 16U
Rodriguez used her combo of ballhandling, strength and a quick first step to get to the rim seemingly at will as IMG opened with a 56-29 win over The System. Rodriguez impressed with her ability to get downhill, and when teams played off she did a nce job of keeping her eyes up and scanning for cutters. She finished with 15 points.
The Mismatch – Fuyubi Langendorf, 2029 Wing, IMG Academy 16U
The 6-foot Langendorf used her size to her advantage inside and out while scoring 14 points in a dominant opening victory against The System. She showed good touch from the perimeter, nice touch in the mid-range and impressive athleticism when getting downhill to the basket. She ran the floor hard and was a problem for any defender she faced – shooting over smaller guards and blowing by slower post players.
Double-Double Machine – Maci Lilly, 2028 Forward, Maryland Lady Shooters MHC 17U
Lilly impressed with her two-way versatility and her activity on both ends of the floor In a win over Virginia Valkyrie MHC. She attacked offensive and defensive boards and made hustle plays, chasing down loose balls and throwing herself on the floor. She kept several offensive possessions alive, and on one in particular she rebounded a missed free throw between two defenders and eventually found a cutting teammate for a bucket.
Lilly’s versatility was key on the offensive end, as she showed the ability to handle the ball on the perimeter and function out of the post. Her height allowed her to see over defenders on the perimeter and hit cutters, and she showed her range by knocking down a corner 3-pointer.
The Floor General – Huntyr Marks, 2027 Guard, Maryland Lady Shooters MHC 17U
Marks did an impressive job of running the show for Maryland Lady Shooters. She saw the floor well – keeping her head up and scanning the defense – while setting her teammates up for open shots. Her passes consistently found them in scoring position, and she continually made the correct reads. She was strong driving to the basket and finishing, and was especially key down the stretch. When Virginia Valkyrie tried to make a run, Marks kept them at bay as she did a good job of breaking down defenders and getting into the lane to draw fouls and get to the free throw line.
The Disruptor – Bria Holloway, 2027 Guard, Virginia Valkrie MHC 17U
Holloway’s defensive effort was key in the second half as her team nearly pulled off a huge rally against Maryland Shooters. She kept opposing guards under consistent pressure, using her quick hands, footwork and anticipation to shadow and pick up steals or deflections
She was equally effective off the ball, swooping in from the help side to cause chaos. Her defensive energy stood out from start to finish.
