 Sunday Storylines

DB Elite 17U Wins OT Thriller

Coming into a matchup against a Butler Heat Elite squad that had dispatched its previous three opponents with ease, DB Elite would need to make big plays when it mattered to pull out a win.

That’s exactly what they did, as several players made key contributions in a 50-46 overtime victory. Rihanna Gregory had 18 points to lead DB Elite, while Angelia Dunn had 13 and Quinlan Pope 8.

The game was tightly contested, with the team tied 20-20 at the half. It stayed close into the final minute, where DB Elite came up big down the stretch. Emma Hughes hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 46-46, and on the ensuing possession she and Gregory combined to force a loose ball and turnover to keep BHE from getting off a potential game-winner.

In the extra period, Gregory hit a pull-up jumper for the first two points, putting DB Elite in position to win with two more. They got two defensive stops, and on the ensuing possession Dunn got free on an inbounds and raced up court before dishing to Madelynn Kusy for the game-winning lay-in.

IMG, Tru2Form Caps Unbeaten 16U Weekends

IMG Academy 16U made the most of its trip north, capping a perfect 4-0 weekend with a 62-52 win over BCRI. The trio of Olivia Witt, Sol Rodriguez and Fuyubi Langendorf keyed their success all weekend.

Tru2Form went similarly unblemished, picking up wins over Sizzle MHC and Toronto Select to stay perfect at 5-0. Maria Knowlton (16 points), Raquel Cruz (12) and Gabriella Stone (10) led the way Sunday in a blowout win over Sizzle MHC, while Ashley King (13) and Cruz (12) pushed them to a 53-27 win over Toronto Select.

 Sunday Superlatives

Versatile Scorer – Rihanna Gregory, 2027 Guard, DB Elite 17U

Gregory had it all going in her team’s 50-46 overtime win over Butler Heat Elite. She finished with an efficient 18 points, and got them in a variety of ways – she knifed into the lane for mid-range pull-ups, got to the rim in transition and showed nice touch from beyond the 3-point line. She kept defenders guessing all game, and was a critical piece to the victory.

The Hot Hand – Carsyn Hulbert, Maryland Lady Pride 17U

Hulbert got her first shot attempt blocked in a morning matchup with BCRI Select. It was the last time the defense seemed to bother her at all, as she poured in a game-high 28 points in a 62-41 victory. The 5-foot-7 Hulbert was a threat from everywhere – she knocked down four 3-pointers, got to the basket for lay-ups, ran the floor hard in transition and got to the foul line effectively. What was truly impressive was how well she moved without the ball, and several times she smartly took advantage of defensive lapses for open shots.
